Located adjacent to Chastain Park, Sutton Middle School serves Atlanta Public School students located in the neighborhood of Buckhead. This recent renovation involved a major reconfiguration of the site.
In its previous condition, Sutton Middle School lacked street presence, proper access for the disabled, promoted pedestrian and vehicular conflict, and ignored proper stormwater management. Breedlove Land Planning produced a design that alleviated these concerns, including adding separate entrances for buses and parent loading and unloading, creating new and accessible parking for staff and visitors, separating service vehicle traffic from outdoor program space for students, improving fire truck access to the building, and completely overhauling the school’s stormwater management facilities. In addition, a new outdoor classroom and plaza was designed to increase student use of the site, and to encourage faculty and staff to expand the school’s program outdoors.
